If you plant a seed... amazing things do happen.

When the Los Angelas riots of 1992 decimated the mainly ethnic neighborhoods of South LA, many individuals and groups were motivated into action instead of being defeated by the events.

One of these groups became known as 'Food From the Hood.' Students from the Crenshaw neighborhood took over a weed choked, garbage strewn quarter-acre lot behind their high school with the goal of transforming the tiny plot into an prolific organic vegetable garden. With the guidance of science teacher Tammy Bird and local business consultant Melinda McMullen the garden has since become internationally renowned, being visited by dignitaries like Prince Charles (an avis organic gardener himself) and even featured on Oprah's Angel Network where they were presented with a $100,000 award and a new GM SUV to replace their aging company vehicle.

The group's motto "Plant a seed and see what happens" has become a mantra heard around the globe. At first, they applied a simple idea: restore the Crenshaw High School back lot and turn it into a vegetable garden to feed the needy and to teach the kids the basic concepts of gardening to the neighborhood's 'at risk youth'. The program has since then evolved into a major business, producing it's own products such as: "Straight Out' of the Garden Creamy Italian Dressing, and four others. Their products are sold nationally by large grocers such as Albertsons and Vons.

FFTH now teaches life skills, environmental awareness, vocational training and business management to it's participants. It has also provided academic tutoring for 77 of it's student-owners attending two and four year colleges programs.

Food from the hood has become an inspiration and business role model for countless individuals and groups around the globe, proving that if you plant seeds, amazing things do happen.
