MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) - An elderly German man lost a briefcase with his life savings of 50,000 euros ($46,550) in cash and gold but had a lucky break when the finder handed it to police, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

The 75-year-old man left the briefcase on a train while traveling to an old age home he was moving into.

Police said they were trying to locate the 38-year-old German man who returned the briefcase. They believe he knew what was in it -- 22,000 euros in cash, four gold bars, jewelry and two savings books.

"It's incredibly moving and kind that he did this. It's good to know that there are still people like that," said Kai Scholl, spokesman for the Munich Federal Border Police.

The owner is obliged by law to pay the finder 3 percent of value of the lost property, Scholl said. It was not clear if the reward would be claimed.
